How To Make Your Own Disney T-Shirts!

We surprised our kids with a trip to Disney World for Christmas and I knew that I wanted to make matching T-Shirts for our family as part of the "reveal" (and for us to wear to the park).  I'm really happy with the way that they turned out, so today I'm sharing the (very simple) tutorial with you!

Here are the supplies that I used:


- T-Shirts from a Craft Store
- Iron-On Vinyl (you can find this at a craft store, but I found it cheaper on Amazon)
- Cricut & the Mickey Mouse & Friends Cricut Cartridge
- An Iron :)


Shape Choice:

I used Mickey's full body and chose the one that has cut-outs for details (like his face, buttons, and the space between his legs).  The face details are not very noticeable, but choosing that shape made his "shadow" a more regular size (rather than choosing the shadow option, which made everything look thicker than it should be).

How Much Vinyl?

I used two rolls of (12x18") vinyl (the sparkly black for the girls' shirts, and the plain black for the parents' shirts).  I figured out the largest size of Mickey's full body that I could cut 2 of, from each roll and chose that size for the adult shirts & my older daughter's shirt. I made my younger daughter's a little smaller. If you want to get a good idea of the size before cutting your vinyl, you could cut a piece of paper & lay it on the shirt to get an idea (that's what I did!).

How to Use Iron-On Vinyl?

You need to cut on the "kiss" setting so that you can cut the vinyl without cutting through the plastic backing.  You'll also want to cut any letters backwards so that when you iron them on, they'll be the right way!  Once you've done that, you'll cut around the shape and remove the vinyl parts you don't want to iron on (around the shape, and spots like the chunk between the legs). You'll want to make absolutely sure that you place the vinyl down on the shirt (with the plastic on top) when you iron it on.

Learn From My Mistakes!

I did a great job with the girls' shirts and then when I moved on to our shirts (plain vinyl), I forgot to make sure that I put the vinyl into the cricut the right way- so I cut on the wrong side.  I was able to make it work, but in the fuss of trying to fix that problem, I forgot to remove the chunk of vinyl between Mickey's legs for one of the shirts.  This isn't a huge deal (and my husband probably won't wear his shirt after our trip, so he doesn't mind ;), but if you want to avoid little mistakes like that, be careful!  :)
